PALM PRODUCE – OIL PALM (Elaeis guineensis)
This is one of the most important of the cultivated types of palm tree. It is one of the world’s main sources of edible and soap-making oil. It bears male and female flowers on the some plant but these ripen at different times. A tree may produce 4-8 branches per year. The colour depends on the variety and can be red, yellow, orange, brown or black. Each fruit has an outer hard black shell which covers a fibrous pulp called the mesocarp which is rich in oil called palm-oil. Inside the mesocarp is the seed called the nut. The nut consists of an outer hard black shall and an inner kernel which is rich in oil, called palm-kernel oil.
NUTRTIONAL VALUES
Palm oil contains carotene from which the human body can make vitamin A. palm kernel oil is used as cooking oil and the residue after oil extraction is used as a good livestock feed. In Europe palm oil and palm kernel oil are used to make margarine and cooking fats.
PROCESSED PRODUCTS
Oil from palm is used for various industrial purposes including soap making, pomade and detergents. Palm wine is made by tapping the sap from the tree while alcohol is prepared by fermentation and distillation processed.
VEGETABLES
Vegetables are plants that are grown primarily for food. They are regarded as edible, fresh, non-toxic parts of plants that can be eaten raw or cooked with meat or fish or other preparations. Vegetables include leaves, stems roots, rhizomes, petiole branches calyx inflorescent, flowers etc.
They are very rich sources of vitamins and minerals and known as protective foods. They are therefore very important in the daily dietary requirement as a source of fibre and mineral salt.
Inclusion of vegetable in human diet will go a long way to improve health and longevity in the following ways:
- It improves body water content
- It facilitates digestion
- Are sources of vitamins A and C that are present in 33% and 25% respectively in green vegetable. Vitamins K is found in yellow and green vegetables.
- Sources of minerals e.g. Calcium, potassium and iron.
- It is a good source of protein
- It can prevents constipation
Growing vegetables have economic and social benefits. Home grown vegetables are fresh, they are cheap and we get a real sense of achievement in producing them. Vegetables provide a good source of income for the farmer.
They are used in scientific research and for medicinal purposes.
